Sharnbrook Summer Expedition 2003
Last July I went on a school expedition to Ecuador in South America to climb some mountains and generally have a good time. This part of the site is all about what happened, just in case you're interested.
Quito is 2850m above sea level.
The highest peak we (nearly) climbed was Cotopaxi, a staggering 5897m tall. It was very cold and windy near the summit, and you couldn't see very far ahead as there was mist and snow all the time.
Another beautiful volcano we visited, Volcán Imbabura, was on the road to the market town of Otavalo.
Otavalo market had an amazing variety of goods on sale for stunningly low prices including, bizarrely, a whole roast pig.
Ecuador is famous for being the most biodiverse region in the world.
My interpretation of this is there are lots of llamas
and bacteria in the tap water which make it unsafe for foreigners to drink.
The itinerary of the expedition is here.
